What Happened to Rapper GloRilla?
Memphis rap stars GloRilla and Finesse2tymes had just finished their performance at Rochester’s Main Street Armory on Sunday night when chaos erupted.
According to Police Chief David M. Smith, at around 11 p.m., a surge of people towards the exits resulted in a dangerous stampede.
While the cause of the sudden rush is still under investigation, Smith stated that there is no evidence of gunfire or any person being shot or stabbed at the scene.
One of the concertgoers, Ikea Hayes, described the harrowing experience to Rochester television station WHEC.
She recounted being “on the ground, just scared, praying, like, you got to get up, you got to move. If you stay here, they’re going to keep running you over. So, you got to get up. You got to move.”
When the police arrived at the scene, they discovered three women badly injured in the auditorium.
Unfortunately, Rhondesia Belton, a 33-year-old employee of Buffalo’s Traffic Violations Agency, died at a hospital.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown took to Twitter to express his condolences and asked the public to keep Belton’s family in their thoughts and prayers.
The other two women were rushed to the hospital with severe injuries.
The tragedy did not end there. Late Monday, the Rochester Police announced the death of a 35-year-old woman who remained unidentified.
Another woman remains in critical condition, while seven more individuals were treated at nearby hospitals for injuries that were not life-threatening.
Anthony Rouse, a security guard at the event, was working at the concert because his daughter was attending.
Unfortunately, she was one of the people injured in the stampede. Rouse expressed his regret, saying, “The whole reason I signed on was to protect her. And I failed.”
While the police are still investigating the cause of the stampede, Mayor Malik Evans has promised to conduct a thorough investigation to determine if the venue operators had the necessary safety measures in place for a large crowd.
Evans has called the fatal stampede “totally unacceptable” and has vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the tragic incident.
“What began last night as a night of live music and fun for the performer GloRilla ended in tragedy,” said Smith, the police chief. “We are investigating several possible causes of the fatal surge, including possibly crowd size, shots fired, pepper spray, and other contributing factors.”
The Main Street Armory has not responded to the media’s requests for comment.
GloRilla, who was nominated for a Grammy for the best rap performance in 2022, tweeted that she was “praying everybody is ok.”
The incident has left the Rochester community in mourning, with many expressing their condolences and calling for a thorough investigation to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
