Born in Ilgın in 1927, Tanır started his career in journalism by publishing the newspaper “Ilgın” in 1950. After graduating from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1954, he became a mental health specialist. Tanır was married and had two children.
In 1961 and 1965, he was elected as Konya Deputy from the Republican People’s Party. Tanır then became a founding member of the Güven Party in 1967 and was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Group. He continued to serve as Konya Deputy from the Güven Party in 1969 and held his position as the Group Deputy Chairman.
In April 1973, Tanır was appointed as the Minister of Health in the TALU Government. He was elected as Konya Deputy for the fourth time in the October 10, 1973 elections and retained his position as the Group Deputy Chairman of the Güven Party. Later on, he served as the Ministry of Public Works in the Sadi IRMAK Government in 1974.
In 1981-1988, Tanır worked as a Freelance Doctor as a Psychiatric and Neurological Specialist. In 1983, he became a founding member of the True Path Party. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Konya for the fifth time in the 1987 elections. During the same period, he served as DYP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chairman and Group Deputy Chairman.
VII. He was brought to the Ministry of Forestry in the DEMİREL Government, which was established on November 20, 1991. He became the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly in 1993. Tanır served as the Minister of National Defense in the ÇİLLER Governments for II. and III.
From 1996 to 2000, he served as the Chief Advisor to the President. Tanır made significant contributions to the political scene throughout his career and will always be remembered as a prominent figure in Turkish politics.
A funeral ceremony for Vefa Tanır will be held on Monday, March 13 at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. After the ceremony, his body will be taken to his hometown Konya and buried in the Ulu Cemetery after the afternoon prayer to be held at the Ilgın Çukur Mosque.
Vefa Tanır was a dedicated and committed public servant who made valuable contributions to Turkey’s political landscape. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
