Largent’s love for music began at a young age, and he played golf competitively during his early years. While working at a country club, he met the general manager of KROQ, an influential alternative radio station. The general manager was impressed with Largent’s musical knowledge and gave him an internship that led to a full-time position in 1985. He quickly climbed the ranks at KROQ and became the station’s music director in 1989.

On Monday, February 20, 2023, Lewis Largent passed away after a long illness. The exact nature of his illness has not been disclosed. However, official reports have confirmed his passing.

In 1992, Largent left KROQ to join MTV as the vice president of music programming. He quickly became the anchor of “120 Minutes,” a channel Sunday-night custom from the 1990s. The show’s popularity increased both Largent’s and the genre’s national exposure. Among the many musicians he featured on “120 Minutes” were David Bowie, Bjork, Trent Reznor, Radiohead, and PJ Harvey.

Largent left the show in 1995 but remained in his programming position until 1999 when he was appointed senior vice president of A&R at Island Def Jam Recordings. While holding this position, he worked closely with several musicians and signed Sum 41 and Andrew WK before leaving the label in 2004.

In 2011, Largent decided to return to school and earned his BA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College. He completed his MFA in 2015. He is survived by Julie Greenwald, chairman/CEO of the Atlantic Music Group, and his two children.

Lewis Largent was a true music industry pioneer, who helped shape the alternative music genre in the 1980s and 1990s. His contributions to the industry will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
