Born in Brighton in 1951, Goody received his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) before making his mark as an actor and poet. He gained recognition in the 1980s for fronting the children's sketch show “Smith & Goody” on ITV with writer and comedian Mel Smith. He later co-wrote the 1985 BBC1 comedy “Wilderness Road” with Richard Cottan, which was set in a seedy London pub.
Goody had a prolific career in both television and film. He appeared in popular TV shows such as “Bleak House,” “EastEnders,” and “Lovejoy,” as well as in the TV spinoff of “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” called “Lock Stock…” He also starred in films such as Peter Greenaway's “The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover,” Mike Leigh's “Mr Turner” and “Peterloo,” and “The Borrowers.” Goody also toured with the Royal Shakespeare Company and was part of Patrick Barlow's National Theatre of Brent.
Cottan, Goody's writing partner, described him as “outgoing, warm, ineffably generous” and “a natural performer. With his distinctive appearance and unique comic talent, he was an unforgettable presence on both stage and screen.”
Apart from acting, Goody was also a successful writer. He wrote a series of two-man comedy theater shows, one of which won an Edinburgh Fringe First Award. He was an original member of theater company Shared Experience, where he performed a one-man show, “The Insomniac In Morgue Drawer Nine,” in 1982. As a writer, he also wrote the libretto for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein opera “The Fashion” in 2008.
In 2021, he published a book of verse, “War and Paracetamol,” which detailed his life and his journey with illness. Cottan described the book as “funny, profound and often in extremely bad taste,” and said it was “Bob's true artistic legacy.”
Goody is survived by his wife Gina, brother Dave, daughters Gemma, Seonaid, and Sophie, and four grandchildren.
