Before her foray into politics, Uccello was an executive at the prominent Hartford department store G. Fox & Co. In 1963, she decided to run for the Hartford city council and asked her boss for permission to do so since the council met on Mondays, a day the store was closed. Her boss gave her permission, and she served two terms on the council before her election as mayor in 1967.

Uccello’s tenure as mayor was notable for several reasons. She was the first woman to hold the position in the city’s history, and she oversaw the construction of the Hartford Civic Center, which opened in 1975.

The Civic Center was a major milestone for the city, as it was a multi-purpose arena that could host sporting events, concerts, and other performances. Uccello’s work on the Civic Center brought more business and revenue to the city, boosting its economy.

After serving two terms as mayor, Uccello was asked by President Richard Nixon to work in the U.S. Department of Transportation in Washington D.C. She accepted the position and worked in the department under successive administrations of presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.
